Skies Weather by Broken Light
Privacy
Skies shows the weather where you are, on this website and in the Android app. Neither has accounts, and the app has no ads. The website shows one ad, from Google. This page says what Skies uses and why. Updated 17 October 2026.
Your location
With your permission, Skies uses your location to show your forecast. On the website your browser asks you first, and you can say no and choose a place instead. To fetch the weather, Skies sends the coordinates (not who you are) to its own server. The server rounds them to a square of about 5 km, asks the weather services below for that square, and shares the answer with everyone in the same square. It doesn't log or keep your location.
Where the weather comes from
- Open-Meteo: the forecast, sea, air quality and the weather maps.
- NSW Rural Fire Service, Queensland Fire Department, the Queensland Government and the ACT Emergency Services Agency: warnings, fire danger ratings and fires near you. Geoscience Australia: satellite fire hotspots.
- RainViewer: the rain radar in the app while Skies is in testing. The website shows Skies' own forecast rain map instead.
- OpenStreetMap (Overpass), OpenFreeMap and terrain tiles from AWS: beaches near you and the radar's map.
- BigDataCloud (website only): the name of the town at your location, looked up by your browser.
Skies' server asks the weather services for you, so they see the server, not you. The radar, map, beach and town-name services are asked by your browser or phone directly and see an internet address and the area being shown, as any website would. Skies sends them nothing else.
Advertising on the website
The website shows one ad, below the weather, served by Google AdSense. Google and its partners use cookies to show ads and measure them, and may use your visits to this and other websites to choose ads that suit you. You can learn how Google uses information from sites that use its services, and turn off personalised ads in Google's ad settings. Skies itself doesn't track you and shares nothing about you with advertisers. The Android app has no ads.
What stays on your device
On the website, your settings, places, your last location and the latest forecast are kept in your browser's storage on your device; clearing this site's data removes them. In the app they're kept on your phone; uninstalling Skies removes them. Neither is sent to us.
Crash reports (app)
If the app crashes or hits an error, it sends a short report to us: the Skies version, the Android version, the phone model and the error itself. Never your location, your places or anything personal. Reports are kept for 90 days to fix problems, then deleted. You can switch them off in Settings, About and privacy.
Purchases (app)
Skies Plus is bought through Google Play. Google handles the payment; we never see your card or payment details, only whether a subscription is active.
Notifications and permissions (app)
The app asks for notifications only when you switch on alerts or the temperature in the status bar, and for location only when you choose to use it. Both can be changed in your phone's settings at any time.
Children
Skies is for everyone and collects nothing personal, from anyone.
